Is Jesus Good or Bad

Today’s reading is Mark 2:18-22Open Link in New Window

Here is today’s reflection by Helen.

Main points

  • Part of a section of the gospel, starting Mark 1:21Open Link in New Window where Jesus is beginning to assert authority over humans, sickness, evil. He is beginning to anger the Pharisees and Herodians (see Chapter 3 V6)
  • In today’s passage, Jesus is asked about fasting—Pharisees fasted a lot—more than the statutory 5 Jewish fasting days. John’s disciples probably fasting as John was in prison.
  • Jesus first explains that there can be no fasting when he (the bridegroom) is actually with them.
  • Jesus goes on to give 2 pictures indicating the new life which he comes to bring—and that He is the source of the new life—the foolishness of sewing a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, and the foolishness of pouring new wine into old wineskins. Jesus is saying that He supersedes the old law and ceremonies.
  • The challenge for us is to look at the state of our wineskins! Do they need renewal?
  • God gives us a renewal ‘toolbox’ which we perhaps need to open more. It contains prayer and His word.
  • Renewal of our wineskins will enable us to be open to the blessings which Jesus wants to pour into our lives and, through us, into the lives of others.

There will be a video version of the service.
