Football 2014

2015: five years old!

This summer we celebrated five years of St Matthew’s Football, with another week of coaching for guys aged 11-16. As well as skills, drills and tournaments, the week included a series of quizzes, some surprise dance moves and a presentation evening where we handed out prizes to all of the 24 players who took part.

Congratulations to our award winners Will (Players’ Player), Jon (Most Improved Player) and James (Coaches’ Player) and a huge thank you to everyone who got involved this year. Our Junior Leaders did a fantastic job supporting the brilliant coaching team of Jos, John, John and Joey – huge thanks from all of us at St Matthew’s and we hope to see you all soon!

2014 – back for more

The St Matthew’s Football scheme had its most successul year yet, with 26 guys taking part in five days of coaching, drills and games. This year nine players aged 16+ acted as Junior Leaders, taking responsibility for running drills and activities and giving valuable support to our coaches Jos, Derek, Tim and Joey. They did a fantastic job and really showed their commitment.

Our presentation evening was the usual mix of fun, music and celebration, with the added bonus of a ‘Match of the Day’ slot from four of the Junior Leaders and a brilliant poem from Joey that perfectly summed up and everything we’d experienced together during the week.

Big thanks to our players for getting involved in every aspect of the week, our Junior Leaders for doing us proud, and our coaches for their continued support and enthusiasm. For more details and photos visit

2013 – the biggest and best yet!

The St Matthew’s Football scheme saw its biggest turn-out yet, with 25 young people aged 11-16 taking part this year. We had 9 players return and there were 16 new faces!

The guys did drills, training exercises and ball skills in the mornings, before moving on to tournaments and penalties in the afternoons. There were plenty of opportunities to chat and get to know each other too. At the end of the week we held our now-annual Presentation Evening at St Matthew’s, when each player received a certificate and a copy of ‘Word 4 U 2Day’. Four special awards were given out – Coaches’ Player (Toby), Players’ Player (Euan), Sportsman of the Week (Matt) and Most Improved (Jacob) – and we enjoyed food, music, a quiz, video highlights and, of course, each other’s company.

A massive thank you to everyone who supported the scheme in its third year, and to our coaches Jos, Derek, Matt, Chris, John, James, Tim and Ben for their hard work, careful preparation and tireless enthusiasm.

2012 – getting into the swing of things

In August 2012 we repeated our popular football coaching scheme at Coombe Dingle Sports Complex. 13 young people aged 11-16 took part in five days of football training, matches and tournaments, with plenty of silly games and ice-breakers thrown in!

The coaches shared what had inspired them to run the scheme for two years in a row and what it meant to them to be a follower of God, as well as a follower of football.

At the end of the week, the players and their families came together at St Matthew’s for a celebration evening of food, video highlights and award presentations.

Many thanks to the six brilliant volunteer coaches Jos, Andrias, James, John, Derek and Matt for their hard work and boundless enthusiasm.
