Mat’s February Letter

What’s in a name? A number of people in my life have called me Tim presumably because they think I look like one. At school many of us had nicknames which were usually earned in some way (some of us liked them). I was known as Rev at school. What’s in a name?

One of the bible verses I’m living with at the moment is from Colossians 3:17Open Link in New Window that says; “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Paul writes this to a young church of young Christians. He tells them to do everything, that’s everything they do and say, that’s everything—which is totally comprehensive—do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus. Which means what?

In the bible names always mean something. Usually they reflect the character of the thing being named. So Paul is encouraging the church to do absolutely everything in the character, or the way, that Jesus would do it; their conversations, their leisure, their eating, their relating, their praying, their worship, their work, their parenting etc. For us this would also include doing our TV watching and driving and shopping etc. as Jesus would. Everything!

In order to do this our character needs to become increasingly like Jesus’ character, out of this change our actions will flow. This in turn means we need the Holy Spirit’s power to help us and we need to commit to practice living life as Christians. This transformation involves allowing God access to our emotional life and story; our internal ‘scripts’ that influence our character. In short if we want to ‘do everything in Jesus’ name’, God needs to transform our character to be more like Jesus including our emotional life. OK, but how?

Well, the Lent course at church, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality is an opportunity to take further steps in this process. Rachel, Caleb, Minty, Billy and I have been doing it and have found it to be a powerful tool in helping us to live more in Jesus’ name.

I hope you’ll join us on this journey beginning on Wednesday 20th Feb at 7.30.
