Mat’s September Letter

I love September and October. It’s when St Matthew’s is at its most alive. I hope you’ve had a great August and that the summer has been as refreshing for you as it has been for me and the family. As I sat in staff meeting the Monday after I returned I became more and more excited by all that is coming up. I hope that, as you read this bulletin, you too will be excited by all the God has in store for us this term.

As September starts we will continue to welcome new people to our community (some have joined through the summer). Do introduce yourself to those you don’t know and (if you can) make it a priority to come to the ‘bring and share’ BBQ on Sunday 9th Sept to welcome one another at the start of this year. We have visitors to welcome at a Thanksgiving on the 9th and 2 baptisms on the 23rd September, we have Back to Church Sunday on the 30th (including breakfast), the Kingsdown Homegrown Festival on the 15th and Alpha starting on Tuesday 2nd October. Not forgetting the Youth Weekend away on the 21-23rd September, the first Messy Church of the new term on Friday 14th and a new experimental service ‘The Well’ beginning on September 30th. A significant new teaching series begins on the 9th Sept and our midweek groups will be following the themes.

In the midst of all this community activity it would be easy to forget that we do all this for the glory of God. During the Summer I have been struck again by the immense love, grace and generosity of God. St Matthew’s vision ‘Living for Jesus; knowing, growing and going’ seeks to remind us of our aim to do everything for Jesus through whom we are God’s children. That isn’t only about what we do in and through church, it’s about what we do each day at home, with friends, at school and at work. We are reminded in Colossians 1Open Link in New Window that all things are created through Jesus Christ and for him, that he is before all things, that he is the beginning so that he might come to have first place in everything (v15-23).

As we begin this new academic year can I invite you, with me, to commit everything afresh to God and to pray that he will be glorified through all we are and do so that others may come to him through our Lord Jesus Christ. Bring it on!
